Mirror, mirror...

What feels like an eternity ago, at linux.conf.au 2005 in Canberra, AJ floated the idea of me being the Debian mirror coordination guy. I expressed interest in this, but somewhere along the line, I think there were some crossed-wires over whether I was interested or not, and nothing came of it.

The other day, I pinged AJ on a few things, and the mirror coordination role came up again. I re-expressed my interest in doing it, and so here I am.

So I'm now in the process of getting my head around exactly what the job entails, whilst I wade through 12 months of mail to mirrors@debian.org, that so far (for August 2005) appears to be about 95% spam. Yay.

I'll also go through all of the current bugs assigned to the mirrors pseudo-package, and try to validate them, and either act on or close them, depending on the current state of affairs and contactability of the submitters.

So I envisage it'll take a while to just get on top of the backlog, and then I'll look at any areas where we can automate mirror verification (I've got to look at what's currently in place). Helping run mirror.linux.org.au has been educational. I quite like the system that the Linux Kernel Archive Mirror System has in place, and wouldn't mind having something similar for Debian, if it's feasible.

But that sort of stuff is a little while down the track, I have to get on top of the backlog first.
